BACK

This is the Bothan Borsk Fey'lya, from the cover of Timothy Zahn's novel, "Spectre of the Past".

Many interpretations can be found of this species (and character), but I really liked the drawing by Drew Struzan (seen below).

This scan is darker than the actual figure, so I hope, one day, to take a picture of him rather than just laying the figure on the scanner.

I've been wanting to do this figure for some time now, and I'm pleased he is finally done. He took one weekend to cut and sculpt, then a day the  following weekend to paint.

This figure started out as Ric Olie, which had a similar outfit to the Drew Struzan drawing. First I carved down his head, jacket and belt. A new head was sculpted from scratch. The chest plate was made by rolling the sculpey flat, cut to approximate size and folded over both the front and back of the figure in one piece. I then trimmed it to size and shape. Using long, thin "snakes" of sculpey, I added the breastplate decorations. Upper and lower sleeve "puffs" and a pouch for his belt were also made of sculpey. I left the legs and boots as they were, as the referring picture did not show them, and I thought they were in style for the rest of the figure. I then cured the sculpey, trimmed and sanded it down.

My sheltie dog graciously donated her hair for the Bothan mane and beard. Quite a few layers were needed for the head; glued into place and then the front was covered with sculpey (at the forehead). Another few minutes of curing set this piece. The hair was then cut to shoulder length. Next I painted the figure and painted on some Dullcoat, being careful not to dull down the metallic areas. Some areas, like painting the hair on his face, was achieved by painting with pin! The copper color for his breastplate was made from gold with clear orange added. I then did a few coats of straight clear orange for the raised edges and decorations.
