Before
Episode One, Lucasfilm conceptual artist Iain McCaig was asked to come up
with ideas of what a Sith Lord should look like. Before the final decision
was made for Darth Maul, McCaig envisioned a female Sith "Witch". This custom
is a compilation of three of his preliminary drawings for this character.
I recently
found a McFarlane Spawn 6" figure for only $2 CDN...and even though this
is larger than the 3 3/4" scale figures, I had previously done one at
this scale for my Guri custom, and thought it would be a great start for
a Sith Witch. This is a wonderful scale to work with, and the McFarlane
toys are so well done that they make great "action" figures with lots
of articulation. The sculpting and detail on these toys is incredible.
(See the picture below to see what it looked like before I customized
her).
First, I had
to remove all Domina's accessories, hair, and headpiece. I carved down
part of her top, leg bands, and boots. It was especially difficult to
carve down her right boot, which was huge! I carved and sanded until it
matched her left boot, which was also smoothed out.
Next I added
sculpey to her head, left arm (to extend her glove up her arm), top (to
make it longer), skirt, belt, cape, and headdress. The cape was cured
seperately from the rest of the figure so I could paint the entire thing
and THEN put it on, gluing in place.
After repainting,
I dulled it down with Testor's Dullcoat, using a paintbrush to paint it
on, leaving her boots shiny.
A large swizzlestick
was cut to length and wrapped with aluminum foil for the hilt.
This figure
was a lot of fun to do, especially when deciding on how I wanted the final
character to look like. Since the base figure had the great torso area,
I used reference picture number 2 for the torso and arms. I did her face
and head wrap like reference picture number 1 (from the comics), and her
skirt and legs are modelled after reference picture number 3.
